چکیده مقاله:

Background: Failure to maintain bone mass density is a major complication in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) and also identifying associated risk factors in CF patients. Materials and Methods: Present study conducted on 59 CF patients aged 5-35 years referred to respiratory clinic of Masih Daneshvari Hospital, Tehran-Iran. BMD was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Patients were divided in two groups: cases aged 5-18 years as group A and cases over 18 years as group B. Anthropometric variables, corticosteroid usage, pulmonary function test, serum calcium, phosphate and 25-OH vitamin D were assessed and correlation of them with BMD was investigated. Results: Low BMD (Z score < -2 standard deviation) was found in 72.8% (44) of patients. There was a positive correlation between malnutrition, Forced Expiratory Volume 1 (FEV1) and BMD (r=59 and 0.47, P

Bone Mineral Density and Cystic Fibrosis: A Review

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common progressive genetic disorder among children which involves lungs, kidneys, intestine and liver. Apart from the significance of genetic factors, various environmental factors particularly bone mineral density are directly associated with CF. Remarkably, bone disease is appeared as a routine and commo...

CYSTIC FIBROSIS Bone mineral density in Australian children, adolescents and adults with cystic fibrosis: a controlled cross sectional study

Background: Low bone mineral density (BMD) is recognised in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) although the pathogenesis remains unclear. The aims of this study were to compare BMD over a broad continuum of Australian individuals with CF with healthy controls and to examine the relationship between BMD and clinical parameters including physical activity, nutrition, and vitamin D levels. Meth...

Low bone mineral density in adults with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND Patients with cystic fibrosis have several risk factors for the development of low bone mineral density (BMD). To identify the prevalence and clinical correlates of low BMD in adult patients with cystic fibrosis, densitometry was performed in 151 patients (83 men) aged 15-52 years. METHODS BMD was measured in the lumbar spine (L1-4) using dual energy x ray absorptiometry (DXA) and ...

Normal bone mineral density in cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND Osteoporosis has been reported as a complication of cystic fibrosis (CF). AIMS To measure bone mineral density (BMD) in non-acutely ill adults and bone mineral content (BMC) in children with CF. METHODS We analysed data from 28 adults and 13 children with CF. Corticosteroid use was minimal for the year prior to study in both groups. Dual x ray absorptiometry was used to measure t...

A cross-sectional study exploring useful indicators for low bone mineral density in male alcoholic patients

Background Alcohol dependence induces low bone mineral density (BMD), predicting osteoporosis, while low and moderate alcohol consumption may even increase BMD. In recent years, undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRACP-5b), bone turnover markers, have gained special interest as useful indicators of low BMD. However, it remains unclear whether other ...

Dental caries and bone mineral density: a cross sectional study.

AIM The relationship between bone mineral density (BMD), age and dental caries has been studied. Quantitative ultrasonography (QUS) is an economic, non invasive, and reproducible method for measuring both bone mineral density and bone elasticity in growing subjects in large populations. METHODS This study evaluated the relationship between BMD and prevalence of dental caries (Decayed Missing ...
